I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me...

And when I awoke, I was alone, this bird had flown
So I lit a fire, isn't it good, Norwegian wood.

The Beatles when wrote this song, had never imagined how it could shape, or should I say make people's lives revolve around it.

I happened to read this book, Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami- a very celebrated Japanese author. And, the book almost revolved around the song, more or less, inspired by it. My very first attempt of reading Murakami it was, and no, I am not reviewing the book. But I am not sure whether I'll read the author again.

I fail to understand the general association of love with depression. A love story is incomplete unless one or both of the protagonists die or can never meet. Pick any of the legendary love stories.
Yeah, they made to the legends because they couldn't meet and died in the course of the their love. Zaalim zamana or some zaalim disease.
A love story can very well be light, full of humor and happy endings, but then, I think that will qualify as fairy tale.

People in general are obsessed with the idea that it is not a love story unless there is no crying, no complexities and no deaths/ suicides.

The book has too many stirring emotions. It dint do anything to me while I was reading it, but it certainly left me depressed for a whole day after I finished reading the last chapter of it.

Even otherwise, I am not a fan of the romance genre. What do you have to look forward in a book when you know you wont be discovering that the killer is the one you expected, or not.

Getting back to Reading

How much have I missed reading, I myself had no idea until I resolved on Dec 31 2010 to get back to reading. I celebrated my new years eve reading. Totally worth it.
Been lazy, occupied or whatever be the reason, once someone who could not sleep without reading at least one chapter, no matter how tired or sleepy; and coming to not reading a single book in months, I felt ashamed of myself.
I could blame Twitter easily for that, but no. Its my own fault.

The abandoned Book Shelf cleaned and adorned for the picture.
However, I have decided to go back to reading. :)
Over last five months I have read some books
  • The Choice- Nicholas Sparks
  • 100 Selected Stories- O'Henry
  • White Tiger- Arvind Adiga
  • Bombay Rains, Bombay Girls- Anirban Bose
  • Highway on my Plate- Rocky Singh and Mayur Sharma
  • Man, Woman and Child- Eric Segal (again)
  • Right Ho Jeeves- P.G. Wodehouse (currently reading)

I know its not enough to be boasted about, but seeing the track record of my past one year ( I'd rather refer to it as lost one year), it isn't bad start to get back on the track.
Special Mention to White Tiger which I read in less than 10 hours while traveling on a long route, so that makes me feel happy. Bombay Rains, Bombay Girls, too, was half read en-route, and the rest half lingered on for days, which I feel bad about.
Thank God for Flipkart.
Next books in queue are Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay.
Given my love for the show, I am definitely going to read the whole series, no matter how many years it must take. :D Fingers crossed.

Recieved with Thanks :)

Yeah. Finally. I received my hard earned prize of the treasure hunt I won at Advertisingh. Though I had almost forgotten about it. But when the door bell rang at noon on a Saturday, thought of going out in the scorching sun to answer that bell was maddening.
Anyhow, it was worth it. The feel of the packet in my hand excited me and I could not wait to tear it open even before signing the receipt for the courier boy. :D
The suspense was killing.
And what was in the packet, I present

Inside it was a sticky note. :D

hehe.. It all right Jagjit, Never mind saying sorry. I am in love with it though I haven't started it yet. Thanks a ton!!

title soojh nahi raha

So where have I been for so many days?? Dint write anything because I happen to bounce into these two books, could not put them down before finishing. One for its goodness and other for boredom.
One is "The Inscrutable Americans by Anurag Mathur". Now this book I would define in the protagonist's lingo.
I am going to the book store and buying this book along with two other books. Now I choose to read this book on second number after "Tuesdays with Morrie". When I am opening this book and starting reading this book, I am finding Gopal very interesting and funny man. His journey to the US is fascinating, also the letters he is writing to his brother back home are extremely comic. I am reading this book on and on and am not able to put it down. I am only stopping in between reading the book to laugh my heart out. Gopal's language is very funny but he is very thoughful and intelligent and how he is starving for getting laid throughout his one year stay in US is humorous. His vegetarian cats are specifically zany and how finally he is fulfiling his desire in the end of the book is ludicrous. I rate this book ****n half.

And the other is book "Sumthing of a Mocktale by Soma Das". I dint like the book particularly. The author (I donot intend to speak bad of her) has not framed the book nicely, spelling mistakes aree too many to ignore and about grammer she has made the disclaimer that she doesnt know it.
No story line is there, the book doesnt seem to proceed. In one chapter she is explaining her first day of college and in nexter she is telling about her campus, teachers, fellow students, trips and stuff common to all those going to college. The sequence is quite messy. She advances to third semester and then comes back to her first day in college. In all, besides recalling own campus days, I would rate the book with **n half stars. (the extra half one for the humor she tried to put in).

The 3 mistakes of my Life- Chetan Bhagat

A fast paced thriller. Not as good as his first book "five point someone", but worth a read, it tells the readers that ordinary people of routine lives are heroes too. The protagonist Govind is an ordinary guy- a loser, but an inspired winner and how things happen to him form the story. And the mistakes referred here are the things he dint do intentionally, but became his mistakes.
Though the book is full of bloopers like the SMS's way back in 2002 and 18 year old Vidhya too cool about loosing virginity and has a typical bollywood masala climax, its a weekend read when there is nothing else to do.
Time Consumed: 4-5 hrs
My Rating: ***
